Pension Fund Investment in Fossil Fuels
2017: Hertfordshire County Council Pension Fund has £140,475,249 invested in Fossil Fuel industries, including Royal Dutch Shell PLC, Rio Tinto PLC, and EOG Resources. For more information see https://gofossilfree.org/uk/fuellingthefire/
Fossil fuel industries make up 3.71% of the pension fund.
Herts County Council has carbon emission reduction targets while continuing to invest in fossil fuel companies, which increase emissions across the UK and globally.
We need national and local investment in renewable energy companies and infrastructure and we need major institutions including local government to divest from fossil fuels
And it is a public benefit argument. £14 billion could build over 200,000homes or generate more electricity than Scotlanduses. By investing this capital into renewable energy, public transport and social housing, local government could create jobs and boost local economies, while protecting pensions.
