We are asking Hertfordshire County Council  to divest from fossil fuel investments!                         Please sign our petition click here to see

The petition – What are we asking Hertfordshire County Council to do?

  1. Immediately freeze any new investments in fossil fuels

  2. Divest from direct ownership and any commingled funds that include fossil fuel public equities and corporate bonds within 5 years

greenheartshowthelove Pension Fund Investment in Fossil Fuels

Hertfordshire County Council Pension Fund has £129,078,000 invested in Fossil Fuel industries, including BG Group PLC, Royal Dutch Shell PLC and Rio Tinto PLC.

Fossil fuel industries make up 3.71% of the pension fund.

Herts County Council has carbon emission reduction targets while continuing to invest in fossil fuel companies, which increase emissions across the UK and globally.

We need national and local investment in renewable energy companies and infrastructure and we need major institutions including local government to divest from fossil fuels

Fossil-Free-x-white-backgroundThis is a moral argument. Pensions are for our and ourfamilies’ future. But that future is threatened by fossilfuel extraction.
It is also a financial argument. When governments finally take climate change seriously andlegislate to leave fossil fuels in the ground, shares in oil,gas and coal will become worthless. Funds which don’tinvest in fossil fuels often perform as well or better thanfossil-fuel heavy funds, so divestment does not meanthat existing pension funds lose out.

And it is a public benefit argument. £14 billion could build over 200,000homes or generate more electricity than Scotlanduses. By investing this capital into renewable energy, public transport and social housing, local government could create jobs and boost local economies, while protecting pensions.

  1. You may already be aware of the Conservative Party press release on a consultation document which says that councils “should not pursue policies which run contrary to UK foreign policy.” The legislation could clearly have implications, for example, by blocking ethical investment decisions related to climate change. The government is consulting on these changes now. I’ve picked up a link to a petition: https://www.caat.org.uk/campaigns/arms-trade-out/local-authorities which others may wish to sign
